Who Is She? Malaysian pop diva

Why Is She Buzzing? Hearts are breaking around the globe. On Monday, the 27-year-old songstress announced her engagement to a businessman and divorcé named Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa. Also known as "Datuk K," the moustachioed lucky guy is 20 years older than his fiancée.

How Big a Deal Is This? Siti is the Celine Dion of Southeast Asia, although you'd have to toss in Princess Diana and Reese Witherspoon to get a sample of her sweetheart star wattage. Her wedding announcement was the first to be broadcast live on Malaysian TV.

Siti Settled Down

Searches on Malaysian pop superstar Siti Nurhaliza jumped 95% this week, as she tied the knot with businessman Datuk K in Kuala Lumpur. Dubbed "the wedding of the year," the ceremony was attended by Malaysian royalty and broadcast in its entirety on national television in Malaysia.

The lavish (yet traditional) shindig inspired searches on "siti nurhaliza and datuk k," "siti nurhaliza wedding," and "siti nurhaliza wedding preparation." We also noticed a large spike this week in queries in the Malay language, indicating intense interest in Siti's big day in her home country.

Folks trying to catch a glimpse of the ceremony on the Web sent searches for Malaysia's TV3 network soaring. Buzz on the nation's largest network jumped 343% this week and related searches on "tv3 live streaming," "tv3 online," and "watch tv3" all clicked as fans looked for video footage of the momentous event. With a huge wedding reception set for this weekend, we expect to see even more buzz on the new power couple emanate from Southeast Asia.

Siti Nurhaliza Wed

Billed the wedding of the year, Datuk Khalid and Siti Nurhaliza’s reception last night saw a traditional Malay ceremony in a modern setting. HAFIDAH SAMAT, SHUIB TAIB, SHARIFAH ARFAH and SURYANI DALIP celebrate with the newly-weds.

IT was a wedding ceremony that would be hard to rival.

Pop sensation Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin and businessman Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa’s wedding reception held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last night was indeed the wedding of the year.

The garden-themed lavish reception was a grand affair that combined age-old Malay customs with contemporary trends. Top that with a sumptuous Malay feast and a glamorous list of well-heeled guests, the entire setting last night seemed tailored for a princess-like nuptial bliss.

Dressed to the nines, guests were welcomed by the captivating sound of gamelan music by the Swara group at the foyer of the premises.

Many were also seen scrutinising the wedding paraphernalia on display at the foyer — the dais and baju kurung that were used by Siti at the Federal Territory Mosque during her akad nikah (solemnisation of marriage) and engagement ceremonies on Aug 21. At this point, nothing could go wrong.

The ceremony began at 8.50pm with emcees Ishak Nengah and Zakiah Anas announcing the arrival of dignitaries and VVIPs.

It was the moment all had been waiting for when the radiant couple walked into the ballroom at 9pm for the bersanding ceremony.

All eyes were on the dashing groom and his charming bride, both dressed in matching traditional Malay attire — in white and encrusted with diamonds and Swarovski crystals — designed by Radzuan Radziwill.

There was pin-drop silence as the couple walked up the magnificent white dais, named Mahligai Asmara, accompanied by their bridesmaids — girls aged between five and 20 — dressed in white.

At 9.30pm, the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah led the merenjis air mawar (sprinkling of scented water) ceremony to bless the couple.

He was followed by the Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, other dignitaries and family members.

Later, Siti invited her parents Tarudin Ismail and Siti Salmah Bachik for a pulut kuning cutting ceremony to commemorate their 38th wedding anniversary.

"I am so relieved that everything has proceeded smoothly," said her mother.

The highlight of the evening came when Siti and Khalid cut the nine-tiered RM12,000 wedding cake. Bedecked in an off-white and pink Christian Lacroix lace Swarovski-studded gown designed by Michael Ong, the bride was a picture of radiance.

But the one that stole the thunder was when Siti surprised her guests with a rendition of a song titled Cahaya Cinta, which she dedicated to her husband.

Earlier at 5.30pm, Siti was in tears when she appeared on the balcony of the convention centre during a 10-minute session to meet her fans.

"I am so disappointed because I could not meet everyone personally. It overwhelmed me to see them coming in full force today. I welcome all my fans to attend the reception in Kuala Lipis on Sept 3."

The session was held in place of a chariot ride around the centre, which had to be cancelled due to security reasons.

Meanwhile, Khalid’s third son Mohd Asyraf, who was present at the reception, was in high spirits.

"I am very happy for them and wish them all the happiness in the world."

Siti Nurhaliza Weds Datuk K

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- In just one breath, the nation's pop darling, Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, 27, was officially married to businessman Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa, 47, at a historic ceremony here Monday. It is the first wedding of a local artiste to be broadcast live on television in Malaysia.

Private television station TV3, which was awarded the exclusive rights to broadcast the couple's wedding at the Federal Territory Mosque in Jalan Duta here, also aired live the engagement ceremony, which was conducted in full Malay traditional custom at the Dewan Solat, about half an hour before the akad nikah (exchange of vows).

Siti, as she is affectionately called, was elegantly dressed in baju kurung of white French lace by Soltiss with blue accents and crystals replete with veil and selendang for the akad nikah, specially created by popular designer Radzuan Razwill.

She appeared composed after the akad nikah was finally performed at 11.40am.

Her marriage to Khalid, better known as Datuk K, was performed by the FT's Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), Registrar of Marriage, Divorce and Reconciliation, Nasroddin Mat Daud.

At the ceremony, Khalid presented a dowry of RM22,222 cash, the figure signifying the date the Quran became the Islamic sacred book, the word of God as dictated to Prophet Muhammad and written down in Arabic.

The solemnisation ceremony was held in conjunction with the Muslim calendar of 27 Rejab 1427 Hijrah, that is during the Israk and Mikraj. (Israk means the night journey made by Prophet Muhammad from the Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Mikraj means the Prophet's accession to heaven. It is during the Mikraj that God gave the command making it obligatory for all Muslims to observe the five daily prayers).

The solemnisation ceremony was attended by the Tengku Muda Pahang, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka Tun Khalil Yaakob and his wife and the Deputy Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

After the ceremony, Khalid put a solitaire diamond-laden white gold ring onto Siti Nurhaliza's slender finger.

In return, the songbird who won the Popular Star Award since 1997, put a ring on Khalid's.

The bride who was born in Kampung Awah, Temerloh, Pahang, received seven trays of gifts with a traditional pink, gold and cream concept called "Azimat Cinta" -- one of Siti's popular songs -- from Khalid. The gifts comprised RM30,000 cash, traditional sweets, the Quran, a set of gems, a piece of lacy material, handbag and wristwatch.

In exchange, Siti Nurhaliza gave Khalid nine trays of gifts with a contemporary silver and green concept called "Sebenar Cinta" (True Love) comprising a songket sampin, a set of baju Melayu buttons, wristwatch, ring, cake, belt with matching wallet, a set of cuff links and a tuxedo.

The engagement ceremony began at 10.30am with the exchange of pantun in full Malay custom. It culminated in Khalid's mother putting a diamond ring on Siti Nurhaliza's finger.

During the engagement ceremony, Siti Nurhaliza sat on a bridal dais called "Mahligai Permata" (Castle of Gems) with a traditional Perak design. The mountain-shaped dais was placed in the mosque's Dewan Muslimat.

There, she received five trays of gifts from Khalid named "Adiwarna" -- another Siti Nurhaliza's song -- comprising bunga rampai (potpourri of finely cut, scented pandan leaves and flower petals), a ring, traditional sweets, a white gold chain, a diamond necklace engraved with the word Allah, a telekung (Muslim women's prayer attire), and "sirih junjung" (betel leaves stacked on each other).

In exchange, she gave Khalid seven trays of gifts called "Sanggar Bayu" comprising sirih junjung, bunga rampai, wajik (traditional delicacy made of glutinous rice), Quran, a prayer mat, sweets, a cake and a pair of baju Melayu complete with Pahang-made sampin.

All the gifts were prepared by Nusantara GEMS, a company owned by Datuk Shah Rezza who was engaged as the consultant for the wedding.

Shah Rezza recently said that the cost of preparing today's ceremonies and the reception at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Aug 28 was only RM500,000 not RM12 million as speculated.

The ceremonies were held under tight security with only invited guests allowed to enter the mosque's halls.

Siti’s wedding to cost RM5m?

A WHOPPING RM5mil! That would be the cost to hold the impending wedding reception of pop darling Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin and businessman Datuk Khalid Jiwa at the KL Convention Centre later this month, claimed Kosmo!

Quoting sources that touted it as the ‘Wedding of the Year,’ the tabloid said it would be held on July 29, a much earlier date than previously speculated.

The glitzy guest list, the paper said, included members of royalty and leaders from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Befitting the grand occasion, where red has been chosen by the prospective bride and groom as the theme colour of the event, the couple will ride in a horse-drawn carriage and a dazzling display of fireworks is planned.

Siti Nurhaliza is expected to wear a shimmering bridal gown worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

The paper said the KLCC management, the police and City Hall would provide tight security at the venue, where Asean foreign ministers would also have their meeting earlier.

Two large halls at the convention centre have been booked for the wedding.

In another celebrity report, Kosmo! said the popularity of Akademi Fantasia 3 winner Mawi has taken a slight dip after his aborted engagement to long-time sweetheart Nordiana Md Naim or Ina recently.

Maestro Talent Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Freddie Fernandez said that Mawi’s overall popularity had not been affected. But he admitted that there was a slight decline.

He said Maestro would not stop Mawi from getting involved with any artiste if he chose to, although this issue had been singled out as one of the reasons for the singer's split with Ina.

Berita Harian reported that nasyid (choral singing in praise of Islam and Prophet Muhammad) might be included as a co-curricular activity in schools as it could be used as an effective medium to instil moral values among students.
